Just in Case

Hey everyone! We're getting prepared for Hurricane Irene, just in case. It's not supposed to be too bad here, probably just wind and rain, but we're being cautious.

Normally hurricanes peter out naturally before they get to Newfoundland because we're so far north. It's unusual that we get more than a day or two of icky weather as a result of one.

Then last year, Hurricane Igor happened...

(We didn't take these pictures, they're from various news sources.)

Now we take it more seriously, and we don't assume hurricanes are going to be nothing.

We're filling up bottles of water, and we're going to the store for some extra food just in case. We have candles and matches because we tend to lose power a lot, especially in storms. Mostly we're just hoping for the best.

How about our blog friends in other East Coast areas... are you guys safe? Are you stocked up on supplies? Is Hurricane Irene supposed to cause much trouble where you live? Hope you will all be alright!

Love,
The Greens and The Roses

  1. I'm a little worried. I've never been through a hurricane before. Here in NYC, Broadway shows are cancelled, the university campus where my parents work is closed. Plus, the mayor shut down the subways, buses, and trains.

I'm hoping all we get is a lot of rain, but my family is prepared with bags just in case.

Actually, I still need to assemble the cat carriers for my furry buddies.

I can see why you're worried, Inky! It's good that your city and your family are taking precautions, though. It sounds like you're doing all you can to keep safe.

We'll be thinking of you and wishing you the best! :-)

  4. Those pictures remind me of the flooding we had here in late May and early June. Not fun! I hope you guys, and our east coast blog friends stay safe.

p.s. how do you guys pronounce Newfoundland?

Today was sunny and 74 degrees F. One of the nicer days all summer. Slightly ironic! Tomorrow may be bad, though.

Glad you survived the flooding, Emily! :-)

Good question on the pronunciation - most people in the US say it wrong, actually. It should be said like newfun-LAND, with the same cadence as "understand."

If that's still tough to sound out, it's pronounced correctly in the first few seconds of this video:

  6. I hope that it does not cross your path! I think the most we will get is severe storms, and I am used to those, but still...I'm scared. I have never been through something this frightening before.
Stay safe! Please keep us updated!

  8. Thanks, Kaya! I knew I was pronouncing it wrong (new-found-land) so I thought it was best to ask. It's like the way people mispronounce Nevada all the time.

Let us know how you make out tomorrow. Stay safe!

I'm scared too, Sabine! The girls who have lived here longer aren't, but this is my first hurricane and it makes me nervous.

    Be careful and stay safe!

    Hi, Taryn.

Our weather has been so messed up all summer! Way colder than usual.

Interesting fact: The easternmost point in North America is actually only a few miles away.

    Kaya

Hi again, Emily. You're very welcome. :-)

Lots of people mispronounce it (including Blakeney's grandparents, who say and write it as "New Foundland" as though it was New Jersey.)

We don't get offended, but we like to let folks in on the right way. ;-)

We'll keep you posted on the storm situation!

    Kaya

  12. I hope the hurricane doesn't bother you or do much damage! I live on the west coast, so it's not expected to really reach us.

  13. That looks so scary, and we thought tornadoes were bad!

Hey Lucy - Glad to hear you won't get any hurricane craziness. So far we haven't had any yet either. It looks like it may have missed us entirely!

It's a good thing because I was scared, but there won't be any excitement now (probably) either. ;-)

    Bree

Hi Naia and Rory. Bree handed me the keyboard because she wasn't here yet during Hurricane Igor. It was really scary for sure!

During Igor there was a lot of wind and rain, and we were without power for almost a whole day... and a lot of people went a whole lot longer, we were lucky. There was all kinds of debris in the road for days, and the traffic signals weren't working, so we were stuck in our house for awhile.

Fortunately no such chaos from Irene!

    Love,
    Kirsten
